American Democracy thrives when more Americans vote. 2020’s elections saw how related voting options are to voter participation. Here in (your state) we must establish voting policies that focus on election security, encourage participation, and meet the needs of everyday Americans. Locally we have the chance to be leaders on pro-voter policies right now. (Insert specific legislation) will be voted on at the statehouse soon and, if they pass, they will increase voting options, and any voter in (your state) will be able to receive an absentee ballot with no excuse for every future election.
As we work on (your state)'s voting laws, we need to understand what made 2020 such a historic voting year. American voters participated in record numbers around the country. Over 66% of eligible Americans cast their ballot for president despite a national health crisis. Voters had more access to voting than ever before because of local and state Governments expanding access to voting by mail, early in-person voting, and more. As a result, over 183 million voters, or 85% of all registered voters, were eligible to receive a ballot in the mail for the 2020 general election with over 70 million opting in to vote safely at home. People voted in 2020 for countless reasons but increased access to vote at home options was the X-factor. (your state)’s election system survived its biggest test thanks to its election officials and poll workers — our guardians of democracy — but there is more to do.
The key to increasing voter turnout while maintaining security during a pandemic was simple; provide more options for voters. Turnout increased in every state between the 2016 and 2020 elections, but it is no coincidence that 7 of the 10 states that saw the highest turnout increase offered the most expansive access to voting at home. Voters in these states had a variety of options for how to cast their ballot and, in many cases, had the option to track their ballot or view ballot processing online so that they could be confident their vote was received and counted. Continuing to offer more safe voting options is also the key to a more cost-efficient and resilient election infrastructure here in (your state).
Offering more options for voters may be a simple concept, but it will take all of us to get it done right. Many of the changes made to our voting rules were temporarily enacted in response to the challenges presented by the pandemic. Our turnout increase of (input stats) is evidence that these policies work and should be available to (your state) voters every year. (Insert specific legislation specifics and benefits) Voters in (your state) have already shown support for a measure like this; [STATS ON STATE SUPPORT]. Increasing voter options while strengthening our security is crucial to continuing this positive voting trend beyond the 2020 election.
Elections are a crucial tenant of the American political landscape, but far too often there are hurdles put in the voter’s way. Scarce polling places, narrow voting times, and limited options do not reflect the best that (your state) has to offer voters. Mail ballot policies aim to demolish those hurdles and create clear paths for any eligible voter to make their voice heard. (Insert specific legislation) support these improvements and give every registered voter in our state a fair shot. It's time for us to give voters what they need, which is more accessible and secure voting options and a more efficient process to vote at home. We must work to ensure (your state) voters continue to have all the options they deserve. Passing (Insert specific legislation) means (your state) will take a necessary step towards sustaining pro-voter policies for the future of our democracy and I urge you to support our efforts.
