DENVER—Today, the National Vote At Home Institute released the following statement in regard to the news that robocalls are being made to Americans in a large scale attempt to frighten voters into not leaving their homes on Election Day:
“The right to vote is one of the foundations of our democracy. It is our most sacred American tradition. When bad actors aim their efforts at specific voters because of assumptions on how those voters will exercise their rights, it is particularly nefarious. Every American citizen is protected in their right to vote and attempting to suppress or intimidate voters into not exercising that right is an attack on voters everywhere, and on our democracy as a whole.
This year we have seen an increasing number of attempts to dissuade or suppress voters around the country. Misinformation campaigns and voter intimidation efforts are anti-voter and anti-American and have no place in our election system. Any and all attempts to suppress a voter from exercising their right to vote should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent.
If you receive a suspicious robocall, it’s best to verify the information directly with your election officials. Voters can use the widget on the National Association of Secretaries of State to find their contact information. Voters who intend to vote should verify their polling location and hours directly with their state or local election officials before heading to the polls. As always, election officials are the best sources for polling place information, state and local regulations, and ongoing updates.”
The National Vote At Home Institute announced that they are tracking reports of anonymous robocalls spreading misinformation in Michigan, Nebraska and North Carolina.
